To access the motor, clutch, and many other parts on Kawasaki Ninja motorcycles, you must first remove the gas tank. So, it is important to know how to effectively do this. The process is quite simple, seeing as the motorcycle's tank is only held on in a few distinct places. A Ninja's gas tank can quite easily be removed in a matter of only five or 10 minutes.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Standard socket wrench set Phillips screwdriver
  1. Step 1

Pull the motorcycle to an open, accessible location and stand the motorcycle up on its center stand. If the motorcycle doesn't have a center stand, use a foot stand or prop it up in some other way. Just make sure that the motorcycle is as secure as possible.

  2. Step 2

Locate the motorcycle's fuel control valve on the left side of the motorcycle, and turn to valve to the "off" setting. Then, pull every hose except the hose leading toward the gas tank off the valve. To do this, press the hose clamps together, and simply slide the hoses off. By leaving this valve connected to the gas tank hose, you don't have to empty the tank before removing it.

  3. Step 3

Use a socket wrench or Phillips screwdriver (depending on which bolts are used) to remove the bolts securing the front fairing to the gas tank. This should consist of two screws on either side of the gas tank.

  4. Step 4

Gently pull the fairing apart, away from the gas tank, being careful not to lose any of the bolt seals between the tank and the fairing.

  5. Step 5

Carefully lift the gas tank up off the frame and out of the fairing. Again, be careful not to lose the bolt seals. Then, set the gas tank on the ground, trying to keep it as upright as possible.

Tips & Warnings
  • It may be helpful to have another person hold your motorcycle's fairing apart as you lift the gas tank up and away from the frame.
  • Always stay aware of pinch points when working around movable motorcycle parts.
