The saying "One man's trash is another man's treasure" could not be more true when it comes to that old, beat up car in the back yard. If you are the owner of an old car that has been rusting out back, then you should know how to get rid of a defunct car that still has good parts. Make some money by selling parts to the weekend mechanic who wants exactly what you have. Many classic car owners are always on the lookout for their next project car to fix up or parts car to tear down. Find those buyers by taking some pictures and heading online to get the job done quickly.

Things You'll Need:

  • Internet connection
  • Digital camera
  • Account with an online seller
  1. Step 1

Decide whether you want to sell individual pieces or sell the entire vehicle. The advantage of selling individual parts is that you can make more money, but it could take a long time to sell all of the usable parts, and you will have to remove the parts yourself. If you sell the car whole as a "parts car," you save time and effort, but won't make as much money. This article covers the latter process.

  2. Step 2

Prepare for the sale of your 'parts car' by clearing away weeds and other junk so you can access the car easily and safely. Inspect the car and write down the parts that can be used to fix or improve another vehicle. If you sell the car whole for parts, you will still need to transfer the title to the new owner, so gather the appropriate documentation, such as the title and original bill of sale.

  3. Step 3

Photograph the vehicle. Take images of important parts that you want to highlight in the sale, such as body panels that are in good shape, the engine components, windows, and wheels.

  4. Step 4

Decide whether you want to sell the car via an online auction (such as e-Bay) or via online classifieds (such as craigslist.org). You can also pay to place an ad in an online or printed service that specializes in selling cars and car parts, such as Auto Trader (autotrader.com).

  5. Step 5

If your car is a make and model that is popular among collectors, create fliers and post them at local garages and car shows.

  6. Step 6

Finally, you can sell the car directly to a salvage yard. You may not get the best possible price, but that's the fastest way to get the old car off of your property.

Tips & Warnings
  • Look at auctions for parts cars on e-Bay and other online auction sites to estimate the value of your parts cars. Read the classifieds in regional car-sales publications such as Auto Trader. Sometimes, people will post "wanted" ads for parts cars just like yours.
  • Old cars that sit for long periods of time can become infested with snakes, rodents, and stinging insects. Be on the lookout for dangerous animals, as well as poisonous plants such as poison ivy.
