Chkdsk scans a computer hard drive to find and correct errors in the file system. The most common causes for a chkdsk on start up is that it has been scheduled as a system task or has discovered an incorrect registry entry or a defective hard drive. Changing the software settings stops Windows from checking the disk on start up, if the problem has been caused by entries in the task scheduler or the registry. Physically damaged hard drives must be replaced to stop the automatic disk drives.

    Removing Chdsk from System Tasks

  1. Step 1

Click "Start." Select the "All Programs." When All Programs opens, click "Accessories." Another drop-down menu opens.

  2. Step 2

Double click the scheduled tasks options. This opens a dialog box of scheduled events. Click "chkdsk" or "autochk" and enter the Folder Tasks menu option. If "chkdsk" or "autochk" appears in this folder, delete them from Folder Tasks.

  3. Step 3

Restart the computer. If the system still runs chkdsk or autochk, proceed to the next section to edit the System Registry settings.

  4. Editing the Registry to Remove Chkdsk

  5. Step 1

Click "Start" to open the menu after the computer finishes its start-up procedures. Double click the item that says "Run" on the Start menu. Type "regedit.exe" into the Dialog box and press enter.

  6. Step 2

Find the following entry in the system's pull-down menu in regedit:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\BootExecute.
The words before each forward slash represent a different registry entry.
Click on the "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINES" registry key and a pull-down menu opens.
Find the System key in the drop-down menu and repeat the procedure of finding each key for each item listed above.

  7. Step 3

Click the "Edit" menu and select "Modify."
Issue the following command from the keyboard: autocheck autochk *
Close the Regedit program and reboot the computer. If the computer still runs a disk check on start up, replacing the computer's hard drive will fix the problem.
