Threader earrings, earrings that are basically threaded through the ear (just as the name suggests), are popping up all over the place. They are sold at fancy boutiques for as much as $75 a pair, but can often also be picked up at local craft fairs. Making your own threader earrings ensures that you have a one-of-a-kind pair and they can be cheaply tailored to match any outfit.

  1. Step 1

Purchase the ear threads. They are small chains that come in 3- or 5-inch increments. You can purchase hypoallergenic threads if you are allergic to many types of earrings. These types of threads are usually sold at any jewelry making or craft store, but can also be picked up online at gemshow-online.com.

  2. Step 2

String your beads or pendants. You can use any type of string or headpin to execute this. Be careful not to pick beads or charms that are too heavy or they will slide out of your ear.

  3. Step 3

Tie the string to the jump (the round hook) on the ear thread. If using a headpin, you can bend the wire with bent chain nose pliers. Simply bend the wire and hook it through the jump on the ear threader. Use the pliers to fasten the wire around the jump, making sure it is securely fastened and that the beads will stay put.

Tips & Warnings
  • Thread your earrings through two or more piercings on your ear for a more modern and edgy look.
  • Do not pick beads or charms that are heavy. This will force the threader out of your hole and you run the risk of losing your earring.
