How to Convert AVI Files to MOV Files
AVI files contain video information that has gone through very little compression. Due to the lack of compression, the video in AVI files maintains a high quality, but the files themselves are very large in comparison to other popular video file types. If you are storing numerous video files on your computer's hard drive, you will find that AVI files take up a lot of space. You can turn the AVIs into smaller files by converting them into a more compressed file type, such as MOV.

Go to the Media-Convert site (see Resources). Media-Convert is an online file converter that converts between numerous video types, including AVI to MOV.

Import the AVI file. Click on the "Browse" button and a search box will come up. Find the AVI on your hard drive and click "Open." Media-Convert will automatically fill in the "Input format" box.

Choose an output format. When you import an AVI file, two boxes will appear by "Output format". Choose the "No video preset" option in the first and the "Apple QuickTime (.mov)" option in the second.

Rename the MOV file. "Rename file to" is under "Advanced settings". Just type a name into the box beside it. If you don't rename the file, it will be given the same name as the AVI file.

Click "OK." When you click the "OK" button, the conversion will begin. Progress will be monitored on the screen while the conversion is taking place. Once the MOV file has been created, a link for the converted MOV will appear on the screen. Click the link and select "Save as" to save the MOV file to your computer.
