Proper seat height is as important as the bike you choose. An improperly fitted seat can lead to injury and definitely discomfort if you are riding a long distance. Use these tips to set your bike seat at the correct height for the best pedal-stroke efficiency.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Put on the clothes and shoes you'll be wearing while you ride your bike.

  2. Step 2

Attach your bike to a trainer if you have one. If you don't, lean against a wall or door jamb, or have a friend hold you up.

  3. Step 3

Once you have gotten your bike to stand, sit on the seat. With your heel on one pedal, pedal backward until one leg is extended at the bottom of your pedal stroke.

  4. Step 4

Your heel should be able to barely touch the pedal without having to shift your hips, and your leg should be fully extended.

  5. Step 5

Have your friend check to see if your hips rock while you pedal the bike, this time using the ball of your foot and not your heel. If they do, your seat is too high.

  6. Step 6

Mark your seat height by wrapping a piece of electrical tape around the seat post. This will make it easier for readjustments in the future--or if your seat accidentally moves.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make sure your leg doesn't fully extend while you're actually riding the bike. Such hyperextension can lead to serious injury.
