Apply Self Tanning Lotion

It can be tricky to apply self tanning lotion without it ending up looking like a streaky or blotchy mess. Self tanners have improved but there are still a few tips that will help you achieve an even, healthy looking tan.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Self tanning lotion
  • Exfoliating scrub
  1. Step 1

Set aside enough time to apply self tanning lotion. Aim for at least 1 to 2 hours for the application and drying process. This isn't something you want to skimp on or rush through.

  2. Step 2

Take a shower or bath. Cleanse and exfoliate the skin to slough off the top layer of skin so that you'll have a smooth canvas when applying the self tanner.

  3. Step 3

Shave. It's better to shave prior to applying the tanning lotion rather than afterwards to prevent any splotching. This will also give you a nice, smooth canvas to begin with.

  4. Step 4

Dry off your skin completely. It's also important to be sure you aren't in an area that is so warm you will sweat.

  5. Step 5

Massage moisturizing lotion into the skin - especially rough spots like the feet, knees and elbows.

  6. Step 6

Apply latex gloves to prevent your hands from getting too dark.

  7. Step 7

Begin applying the self tanning lotion in circular motions to your shoulders and work your way down to your legs.

  8. Step 8

Apply a small amount of the sunless tanning lotion on the tops of the feet, the face and behind the ears because these areas will darken easily.

  9. Step 9

Remove gloves and apply a regular moisturizing lotion into the knees, elbows and sides of the feet to blend and lighten the self tanning lotion. Rub lotion on the hands as well.

  10. Step 10

Allow the self tanning lotion to dry for about 20 minutes making sure to avoid contact with anything.

  11. Step 11

Wait 1 hour after applying the self tanner prior to getting dressed.

Tips & Warnings
  • Applying a gradual self tanner after you moisturize and before you apply the self tanning lotion can help to hide any areas that may end up streaky or splotchy.
  • Have a second person help you in applying the self tanner to your back and other hard to reach areas.
