Step 1
Research:
Most states have a lemon car law, but it's much easier if you can avoid buying a lemon car in the first place. So the first thing that you will need to do is a little research. Check out an automobile review site like car complaints, to find out if this make and model of car has any known defects or problems. -
Step 2
Run the the cars VIN(vehicle identification number) before buying. This will show you if there has been any recalls and if the car has been involved in any major accidents. You probably don't want to spend any money on a vehicle that you may not even buy. But if it saves you from buying a lemon car, the price will be well worth it.

Step 3
When buying a used car always make sure to have it looked over and inspected on a lift by an independent mechanic. This is especially important because some accidents may not show up on the VIN report. The cars owner should be happy to let you check it out. If not, this is a very good sign that you're going to end up with a lemon if you purchase the car. At least 400,000 cars were damaged in Hurricane Katrina and unfortunately some of these cars did find their way back onto the market.
