Finding a good book doesn't have to be difficult or overwhelming!

Reading can be one of the most entertaining and enjoyable activities although it can be completely overwhelming to walk into a library or a book store where there are thousands of books crammed onto shelves, each one looking like the next. How is anyone supposed to find a book they will truly enjoy when there are so many genres and types of books to choose from? Fortunately, with a little research and some easy tips, anyone can find a book they will really enjoy.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • A computer
  • Access to a library or book store
  1. Step 1

Make a list of all the books that you really love. You may not be able to think of many right off the top of your head but as you go about your day, titles will come to mind. Jot them down.

  2. Step 2

When you have your list of books, look up the authors of each of them. Chances are if you liked a book by a particular author, you will like their other works as well.

  3. Step 3

Using a search engine like google, run a search with the words "If you like (insert author's name)" Online book stores like Amazon or Borders have lists of books similar to those written by your favorite authors. These sites are particularly good because they provide written summaries of the book and also display user comments. Take a look at these comments. Because they are written by readers like you and not paid critics, you'll get a very honest opinion on the book.

  4. Step 4

Another trick you can try is to run a search on a favorite author. They may have written other works that you weren't familiar with. For example, many people know author Dan Brown for writing the DaVinci Code but few know of his earlier book, The Digital Fortress or his upcoming book, The Lost Symbol.

  5. Step 5

Judge a book by its cover. Despite the popular saying, judging a book by its cover can actually help you find an interesting read. When a book catches your eye, read the back cover or inner flap to get an idea of what a book is about.

  6. Step 6

Many book stores and libraries display currently popular books and genres. Because of the recent Twilight craze, I've seen many book stores with displays of other fictitious books about vampires. You should check out these popular book displays because, well, to be popular they must be interesting to many people and they may just appeal to you.

  7. Step 7

You can also ask a librarian or store employee for suggestions. It's their job to know the ins and outs of books. If you tell them your interests, they can give you many good suggestions.

Tips & Warnings
  • Don't be afraid to go off the beaten path. If you really enjoy fiction books, don't be afraid to read a biography or autobiography. Chances are your favorite athlete or actor has a book that will truly interest you.
