How to Use AHAs
AHAs, or alpha hydroxy acids, are compounds that are used to improve the look of your skin. There are a number of different AHAs, including glycolic acid, lactic acid, mandelic acid, citric acid and tartaric acid. Low concentrations of these acids are present in over-the-counter skin products. High concentrations are used in skin peels performed under the guidance of a physician. AHAs can help turn back the clock by reducing pigment issues, minimizing wrinkles, smoothing the skin and helping to clear acne. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Purchase an AHA. AHAs for home use are readily available at drugstores, discount stores and upscale department stores. There are a number of different AHAs to choose from, including lactic, glycolic and citric acid. Since smaller molecules penetrate the skin easier than larger ones, glycolic acid is a good choice to start with, as it is comprised of the smallest molecules.

2
Wash your face with a non-irritating gentle cleanser such as Cerave or Cetaphil. Do not use a medicated cleanser. A medicated cleanser combined with AHA can be irritating to the skin. Dry your skin.

Apply the AHA formula to the skin. Use the amount suggested by the manufacturer. Generally, a thin coating on the area to be treated, such as the face or back of the hands, is recommended. Because AHAs can create sun sensitivities, it is best to apply them in the evening before going to bed. When you first start using an AHA, apply it every other day. Build up to a daily application.
-
4
Wear sunscreen prior to going outdoors. AHAs create sun sensitivity, even when you have not applied them for a few days. This can result in reddening of your skin, and other irritation.
-
5
Allow time for the AHA to work. Generally, you will see results in a few weeks. Initially, there may be some irritation. If the irritation does not clear up, or becomes problematic, discontinue use.
