Clip-on earrings are not as popular as they once were. There are many vintage and retro clip-ons that would make a bold statement if worn today, but most people now have pierced ears. You can convert a clip earring into a pierced one with a few simple tools. Pierced earring posts and backings that can be glued onto old clip-on earrings are available at craft and bead stores. You can find inexpensive clip-ons at thrift stores and antique markets.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Needle nose pliers Metal snips Metal file Jewelry glue Ear post
  1. Step 1

Pry the clip off the back of the earring gently with your needle nose pliers. The clip will be either soldered or glued on.

  2. Step 2

Cut off any excess pieces with your small metal snips. Cut as close to the earring as possible.

  3. Step 3

File any remaining solder or glue from the back with a metal file. Get the back as smooth as possible.

  4. Step 4

Place a small dab of jewelry glue onto the back of the earring and press the pad of the post onto it. Make sure the post is centered near the top of the earring. Allow to dry for 2 hours.

Tips & Warnings
  • Converters are available at craft and jewelry stores that can turn clip-ons to dangle earrings without removing the backing.
  • Never alter antique or heirloom jewelry because it may be valuable. Use gold or silver posts if you have a metal allergy.
