Things You'll Need:
- Hen Decoy Shotgun Full suit of camouflage Turkey call (any type) Shock call (owl hooter is good)
-
Step 1
Be dressed in full camouflage, including your face. Find a thick patch of woods with lots of valleys and ridges. Turkeys will usually roost in a few large trees in the bottom of a draw and fly down near daybreak.
-
Step 2
Be out on top of a ridge well before daylight. Just as dawn is breaking, use the shock call a few times (owl hooter). This should spook or "shock" a tom into gobbling if he is near enough to hear you. Once you hear a gobble, try to pinpoint the bird's location and then make a plan of how to get to him.
-
Step 3
Hike to within 100-200 yards of where you thought you heard the tom gobble. Make sure you are relatively on the same elevation as the bird and there are no obstacles between you and the bird's location.
-
Step 4
Find a large tree to sit against. Set the hen decoy up 40 yards in front of you, preferably in a clearing so it's easily seen by any passing turkeys.
-
Step 5
Use the turkey call a few times and keep an eye out for any approaching turkeys. If all goes well, the tom will be enticed by the prospect of a new hen and will follow your calls to the decoy where you can take aim and bag your prize.
