A CD-rewriter is a convenient tool that allows you to save files to disc for transferring to another computer. If you need to reformat your drive, you can save important documents and applications. Then once the files are safely on the computer, you can erase the disc and use it again. CD-RW discs are rewritable, but CD-R are not. You cannot use a CD-RW to burn music to play in a regular home or car CD player. For this, you must use a CD-R.

Instructions

    • 1

Insert the CD-RW disc into the burning drive. Press "X" on the top of the "Autoplay" window.

    • 2

Press the "Start Menu" icon. Select "My Computer." Double-click the CD burning drive.

    • 3

Enter the name of the disc. Click "Next." The CD-RW formats when you select the "Yes" button. Do not shut down or restart the PC while formatting the disc. The process completes in about three minutes.

    • 4

Use a burning program to add files to the disc. This includes a third-party program, such as Nero (see Resources), or the Windows built-in burning application. With a third-party program, select the "Multisession Disc" option to add files after the initial burn.

    • 5

Delete files from the disc. Go to your burning drive. Right-click on the CD drive. Scroll to erase files. Wait while the disc removes all files.

Tips & Warnings

  • Add files to the CD-RW carefully. You cannot delete only one file from the disc. You must erase the entire disc. If you want to arrange the files on the disc, copy them to an empty folder on the hard drive. Then erase the disc and burn the remaining files onto the CD-RW.
