How to Use a Bay Leaf

Bay leaf is used to add a rich and aromatic flavor to savory dishes. It comes dried as a whole leaf or crumbled powder. Fresh leaves from your herb garden can also be used. Whole leaves are the preferred form by most cooks as they impart the most flavor to the recipe. Bay leaves are most often used to season meat, poultry and seafood dishes. They are also used to add depth of flavor to sauces and marinades.

  • Bay leaf Scissors String Cheesecloth Spoon Bowl

    Soups, Stews and Sauces

  1. Step 1

    Cut a square of cheesecloth twice the size of the bay leave. Lay the bay leaf and any other herbs to be used in the recipe on top of the cloth.

  2. Step 2

    Fold the cheesecloth around the bay leaf and tie it closed securely with string.

  3. Step 3

    Place the leaf into the dish for the duration of its cooking time. Remove before serving.

  4. Meats and Rubs

  5. Step 1

    Crush one bay leaf with the back of a spoon inside a small bowl. Powdered bay leaf can be substituted.

  6. Step 2

    Mix any other spices called for in the recipe with the bay leaf in the bowl.

  7. Step 3

    Sprinkle the crushed bay leaf and spices onto the meat. Alternately, you can rub it onto the meat with your fingertips.

  8. Step 4

    Sprinkle any excess crushed bay leaf onto the meat before serving as garnishment, if desired.

Tips & Warnings
  • One teaspoon of powdered bay leaf is equal to 1 whole leaf. Bay leaves can be used as a garnish on top of soups.
