Current economic conditions are tough; as a result there has been an increase in the number of people facing homelessness. The National Coalition for the Homeless estimates that between 5 to 10 percent of homeless people in the United States have dogs or cats living with them on the streets. These pets provide comfort, companionship, protection and warmth to their homeless owners. These pets are usually taken care of to the best of their owner's abilities and are well loved. However, their basic needs are not always met. There are many steps you can take to help these pets.

  1. Step 1

Volunteer to help a local homeless support group sort and distribute pet food and supplies.

  2. Step 2

Donate pet food, supplies or money to groups which support efforts to help pets of the homeless. The homeless often must choose between food for themselves and food for their pet. Collection sites for donations can be found on Petsofhomeless.org./.

  3. Step 3

Talk to your local homeless shelter, soup kitchen or food pantry about the need for pet supply donations. Volunteer to organize a collection drive in your community.

  4. Step 4

Provide certificates to cover costs of spay/neuter or other medical expenses.

  5. Step 5

Homeless pets do not have access to regular medical care. Offer transportation to low-cost veterinary clinics. Organize a mobile vet clinic to visit an area easily accessible to the homeless.

  6. Step 6

Rally local groomers and host a free grooming session for pets of the homeless .

  7. Step 7

Lobby to allow pets in homeless shelters. Many of the homeless feel forced to choose between shelter and their pet. Many choose to keep their pets and therefore end up on the street for an extended period of time.
