How to Convert an M3p to an MP3

The extension ".M3P" belongs to the computer program Mach 3, a design tool for industrial purposes. This is relatively obscure software, so it's more likely that an M3P music file was simply named incorrectly. Renaming the file should restore its musical traits.

Instructions

    Showing File Extensions on a Mac

  1. Step 1

    Skip this section if you are running Windows, or if you can already see file extensions (the suffix following the period in the file name) on a Mac.

  2. Step 2

    Click on the "Finder" tab and click "Preferences."

  3. Step 3

    Click on the "Advanced" tab and check the box that reads "Show all file extensions."

  4. Renaming the File (For Windows and Mac)

  5. Step 1

    Click the file name twice, but slower than a normal double click. Wait a moment, and you'll be able to edit the file name.

  6. Step 2

    Rename the extension from ".M3P" to ".MP3" and press "Enter."

  7. Step 3

    Verify in the pop-up warning message that you do want to change the file extension.

Tips & Warnings
  • These steps will work for many file types where the extension has been accidentally misnamed. Usually, no loss of data will occur.
  • As a rule, be wary of unknown file types acquired from Web sites or people you don't know and trust. These can be viruses harmful to your computer.
