Things You'll Need:
- Barrettes Brush Comb Hairspray Styling gel
-
Step 1
Look at your hair before selecting barrettes. Short hair often requires smaller barrettes than long hair. Thick, curly hair needs large, wide barrettes, while wispy, straight hair needs barrettes with teeth or some other type of gripping device to hang on to. Try out a couple of different types of barrettes until you find the one that best suits your needs.
-
Step 2
Brush the hair before putting in any barrettes. Brushing the hair after the barrettes are in place can pull the strands through the barrettes, making the hairstyle appear uneven or messy.
-
Step 3
Use a comb to separate the section of hair that should go in the barrette from the rest of your hair. This ensures a neat hairstyle. Apply a bit of styling gel to the section if your hair is frizzy or unruly.
-
Step 4
Pull the section of hair into place and situate it appropriately. Twist the section of hair and push it forward to create a bit of volume; pull it straight back for a slick, neat look.
-
Step 5
Slide the back of the barrette behind the section of hair, capturing some of the free-hanging strands behind that section as well. Slide the front of the barrette over the front of the section of hair, positioning it appropriately. Clip the barrette closed and spray the section with hairspray to keep it in place. Repeat until the hairstyle is complete.
