Ford vehicles use two methods to attach the sway bar links. One type uses a bolt-on link, which features rubber molded into the ends of the links. The other method employs a tube and rubber cushions with a long through bolt. Regardless of the method your vehicle uses, installing a sway bar link requires nothing more than a pair of wrenches, and the ability to get under the vehicle.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Wrenches
  1. Step 1

Compare the new links to the old links. Pay close attention to which is right or left, and which end is up.

  2. Step 2

Remove one of the old links. This will require two wrenches. Use one wrench to hold the through bolt, and the other to remove the nut. On vehicles that use the cushion and tube design, it is possible for all or part of the link to be missing. This is due to the bolt breaking from rust or stress, which releases tension on the rubber cushions, allowing them to fall out.

  3. Step 3

Orient the new link in the proper direction and install the nuts on the bolts, again using two wrenches. Tighten the nuts and bolts securely.

  4. Step 4

Assemble the components of a through bolt sway bar link and install the bolt. Tighten the nut until all of the rubber cushions are evenly compressed to about 2/3 of their uncompressed thickness.
