How to Change the Finish of Interior Wall Paint
The finish of your interior wall paint can make a significant difference in the look of a room. Some textures make the color really "pop" and accent items in the room within the same color scheme. Some finishes draw the eye away from the walls and to other items in the room. Other finishes determine how easy the walls can be cleaned. Changing the finish of your interior wall paint is a simple job, but does require an understanding of which finish does what. Does this Spark an idea?

How to Change the Finish of Interior Wall Color
-
1
Use a flat paint if you want the lowest sheen possible. If you are covering a semigloss or glossy finish, first sand the existing paint with fine-gauge sandpaper. Brush away any dust with a clean paintbrush or damp rag and apply a coat of flat paint.

2
Change your finish from flat to semigloss if you want your walls to be noticed but not be the focal point of the room. Semigloss paint is heavy and durable and provides a moderate sheen. When applying semigloss over flat paint it isn't necessary to sand the walls. If you're applying semigloss over glossy paint, a light sanding of the glossy paint is needed.

A satin finish has a very slight sheen, making it easier to clean than flat paint. If you're painting over semigloss or glossy paint, sand the original finish first.

You can create a paint wash by adding water to thin out your paint. A paint wash goes on the walls in a thin consistency, and will show the brush marks. When it dries it has a textured look to it. If you use a paint wash, sand the original finish no matter what type of paint was used.

You can also add a wall texture mix to your paint. One product you may wish to try, Design-R-Wall, is available by the bag. Depending on the depth of texture you want, you can add up to the entire bag of texture to your paint. Lightly sand semigloss or glossy walls before applying this finish.
