How to Find Pictures for Decoupage

I love collecting art work, except I don't have much of a budget. Whenever I travel I try to find a gift shop that carries note cards made by local artists. Usually these are unique pieces of art that have been reduced in size. I get to enjoy the work of a variety of talented artists, while staying within my modest means. And instead of hiding them away in a drawer I use them for decoupage. Which is why they are step number 1.

Instructions

1. Visit gift shops that cater to tourists. You'll find art prints in a variety of sizes by local artists. Match themes to cover a piece of furniture or even a wall or ceiling.

2. Gift wrapping paper has breat, colorful motifs that can be cut out and used. There are many themed papers so you can always find something to cover a gift meant for Christmas, Valentine's day, a Baby Shower, or Birthday.

3. Photocopy old photographs, old prints, sheet music, letters, stamps, recipes, you name it. Whatever you think is worthy of being in your scrap book can become decoupage material. Once copied you can even color any old sepia tone or black and white prints using colored pencils or even crayons.

4. Books and magazines offer a vast amount of material. However most are not printed on paper or use ink that works well. Best to photo or color copy onto heavier paper and use that instead.

   After you've cut out the images you plan to use it is nearly always a good idea to apply sanding sealer or, for an aged look, shellac to your paper Find it at the hardware store. You can also use spray fixatives from the craft store or use white craft glue, diluted to about the consistency of paint. This will prevent ink from bleeding and make the paper much easier to handle. Alcohol based sealers will dry very quickly. Water based will take a bit longer.
