The first thing to remember is that your boss is not your friend or your shrink. They are not there to hear about all your problems and excuses. As long as you do your job and do it right then there should be no reason to fear your boss or be intimidated by them. Talk to them just like they are a person, because they are!

2
Consider your bosses personality before you head up to talk to them. Keep in mind that communication is the key to success and can be the key to failure as well. If you are talking in a way your boss does not understand then they are less likely to pay attention. Where as if you talk to them i a way that interests them you can have their undivided attention.
