Things You'll Need:
- frozen tray full of iced vinegar cubes
- dish washing liquid
- lemon, lime or orange
-
Step 1
The first step to removing garbage disposal odors is to flush the drain with hot soapy water, using a lot of soap. Secure the stopper in the disposal; squirt double the amount of dish washing liquid you normally do when washing dishes. Fill the sink with hot water, but not so hot that you can't put your hands in it. Now, simply pull the stopper and let the hot water and soap flush the disposal and drain.
-
Step 2
After you have flushed with hot soapy water, put vinegar ice cubes (an entire tray's worth) into the sink and turn the garbage disposal on. You may not enjoy the strong odor of the vinegar, but it won't linger too long and it's better than the offensive odors you are eliminating, right?
-
Step 3
From here on, when using your garbage disposal, once the contents are ground, run the water for an additional 15 or 20 seconds; if whatever you have ground is greasy, use hot water and a squirt of dish washing liquid.
-
Step 4
Once a week, cut a lemon, lime or orange into slices and grind in the disposal to keep it fresh smelling.
