Step 1
Determine how you will be using your new internet service. If you only access the internet a few times a month for email and reading the news, then a simple dial-up connection may be all you need. If you are a frequent internet surfer, pay your bills online, like to download music and like to occasionally watch short videos, then DSL (a digital subscriber line) may be the right choice you for you. If you are a serious gamer, that needs the maximum speed available, you may want to try cable or satellite internet. Compare upload and download speeds of internet service providers.

Step 2
Research the prices and deals offered by ISPs. Do they offer an introductory special? What is the monthly regular price? Does the price make sense in comparison to the projected speed of service? Do they offer any support, computer protection software, or extra services at no charge? Are they known for quality customer service? Think about whether or not you would like to sign a year-long contract or if you would rather go month to month. Do they charge you a cancellation fee if you close your account before the contract is up? Is there a set-up, equipment (modem, box), or activation fee? Remember to shop around and read the details of any offer being signing up.

Step 3
Search the internet for special internet deals. Check well known providers and also look into local internet services. Ask you neighbors which ISP they use. What are others saying about the value of the services offered? Check to see if you can change speeds or plans if your internet needs should change. If you are not sure, see if the company will offer you a money-back guarantee or free 30 day trial period. Check into bundling services as well. Would you save money by bundling your ISP with another service, such as telephone or television service? Internet service can cost hundreds of dollars a year. Make sure you are getting your money's worth.
