A whole chicken is a fancy dinner that's so easy to make. Here's how to dazzle your guests with a lemon-herb flavored whole chicken, made in the crockpot.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 3-4 lb. whole chicken
  • 1 lemon
  • 1 medium-sized onion
  • thyme
  • salt
  • pepper
  • butter
  1. Step 1

Begin with a 3-4 pound whole chicken (the label will probably call it a fryer). If it is frozen, leave it in the refrigerator to thaw for about two days. When you're ready to prepare it, remove it from the package and rinse it well with cold water, then dab it dry with a paper towel. Be sure to remove giblets, if there are any.

  2. Step 2

Chop the onion and place it into the chicken's cavity. This adds some extra flavor while the chicken cooks.

  3. Step 3

Rub butter onto the dry skin of the chicken. If it's easier, you may want to brush some melted butter on the skin instead.

  4. Step 4

Roll the lemon on the counter to release the juices, then cut it in half and squeeze the juices all over the chicken.

  5. Step 5

Add thyme and any other spices you like. I added a blend of seasonings that included thyme, dill, oregano, parsley, garlic and many others, and it was very flavorful.

  6. Step 6

Place the chicken in the crockpot and cook on low for 8-10 hours, depending on it's size. Once you see that it has browned a bit in the crockpot, try to pull off one of the legs or wings. If it falls off with little or no effort, the chicken is done.

  7. Step 7

Serve with potatoes, vegetables, rice, or whatever you like. Enjoy!

Tips & Warnings
  • Add extra time if the chicken is bigger.
  • Be sure to allow the chicken extra time to cook, in case it isn't done. You can always leave it on the "keep warm" setting if it finishes early, but it's a disaster if your guests have been waiting two hours for dinner and it isn't done yet.
