How to Find Product Key on Windows XP CD

A product key is required by Microsoft to validate and activate a Windows XP installation. If you need to reinstall your operating system due to system failure, malware or other reason, you will need the product key to reactivate your operating system during installation. Without a valid key, the operating system will not install.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the CD case for your Windows XP CD.

    • 2

Look for a yellow or orange sticker on the back of the case.

    • 3

Locate the Windows XP product key on the sticker. The product key is a 25-digit string of letters and numbers, which usually appear in groups of five.

Tips & Warnings

  • If your computer came preinstalled with Windows XP, you need to contact the manufacturer of your computer for a replacement key. If you have lost your XP case and product key, you need to contact Microsoft Customer Service and Support.
