Things You'll Need:
- Spare house key
- Creative place to hide key
-
Step 1
First, get yourself an extra key to the house by going down to the locksmith. This key needs to be checked, before you hide it, so you know it will work on the doors. It is suggested to get only a key to a door that isn't right on the street, instead a back door might be a better choice.
-
Step 2
Now that you have your key, you need to find a place to hide it. Usually you want it out of eye shot and in a not too obvious place. Instead you want it to be somewhere easy enough for you to get but hard enough that no one else would stumble upon it.
-
Step 3
One of the more safe places is in the bottom of the flowered pots. This could be in the actual bottom of the flower pot (so put the key in a plastic bag and fish it down to the bottom) or between the flower pot and the base. Definitely don't just throw it under the flower pot as that is too obvious.
-
Step 4
Consider purchasing a fake rock. Made in different shapes and sizes, you can purchase a rock that looks like it is part of your garden. Placing the key inside the rocks secret compartment, the rock can be seen all the time, but it won't be known it is fake, unless it is picked up.
-
Step 5
Tape your key under the porch. Placing the key in a plastic bag, tape the bag to a dark spot under the porch. It is highly unlikely anyone will search there yet the key is close enough to find if you are locked out.
-
Step 6
Inside the BBQ. This simple little contraption can be your secret hiding location that only you will know about. Tape the key to the lid and don't expect anyone to look for anything other than food.
-
Step 7
On the top lip of the screen door frame. This usually is one to two inches thick which is wide enough or a key to lay on top flat. Make sure you take it into place, just in case you slam the screen door one too many times.
-
Step 8
If you don't feel comfortable leaving the key outside, ask the neighbors to hold on to the copy of the key in case of an emergency. Then when you are locked out, go over and collect your key to get inside quickly.

on 8/27/2009 One thing to think about...I used a standard rock hide a key to hide my spare key outside. My neighbor was having issues with his cable recently. So, while I wasn't home, some utility people came over to check his cable. Unbenounced to me, the cable was buried directly under the rocks where my key was hidden. Now my rock and key are missing. Make sure you hide your rock/key in a safe place so this doesn't happen to you.

on 7/13/2009 My company RocLok is a safe alternative to simply hiding a key somewhere inconspicuous outside or in a standard rock hide a key. The RocLok is the only faux rock hide a key that incorporates a hidden combination lock to secure your spare key. It's important to have a back-up to your back-up because Murphy's Law is that the day you lock yourself out your neighbor you gave the spare key to will be gone.
