Gas is stored under pressure. As long as the pressure remains constant, the danger of an explosion is minimal. If the storage tank develops a leak, either through deterioration or physical damage, a once safe storage tank can turn into a dangerous situation. By knowing what to do if you smell gas (indicating a leak) you can avoid the risk of harm to you and your family.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Never assume that the odor of gas smell is caused from anything other than your gas tank. If you smell gas if you have a gas alarm that goes off, jump into action IMMEDIATELY!

  2. Step 2

Extinguish any open flame or smoking materials that may cause ignition. Think candles and incense as well as cigarettes, pipes and cigars.

  3. Step 3

Get everyone, including pets, outside and away from the house or building.

  4. Step 4

Shut off the gas supply at the tank.

  5. Step 5

DO NOT CALL FROM YOUR HOME or USE YOUR CELL PHONE INSIDE! Use a neighbor's phone to call the gas company. Do not take chances- if you can not reach them, call the fire department.

  6. Step 6

DO NOT turn on light switches, thermostats or appliances. A spark can cause an explosion.

  7. Step 7

Remain outside or in a neighbor's home until the leak has been located and fixed. It is a good idea to open windows at that point and allow the air to freshen before returning.

  8. Step 8

    Other safety measures to remember-

Gas companies add a disagreeable scent to the gas so that if a leak develops it will catch your attention and spur you into action. Remember, however, that illness, the use of tobacco, drugs or even air fresheners can mask the smell.

Routinely inspect or have your gas appliances inspected.
