How to Treat Degenerative Disc Disease of the Neck

Cervical (neck) degenerative disc disease can cause neck pain, general stiffness of the neck, numbness, tingling and even weakness in some areas of the body such as the arms and shoulders. Diagnosis of the condition is made by physical exam as well by imaging such as X-rays, CT scans or MRIs.

Nonsurgical Treatment

1. Apply heat or ice to help relieve the pain and stiffness of the neck.

2. Take pain medication to alleviate the symptoms. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatories and acetaminophen are recommended. Steroids, muscle relaxants or other prescription medications may also be indicated.

3. Exercise the neck muscles to help maintain mobility and flexibility and relieve stiffness.

4. Physical therapy can be helpful if the patient cannot perform appropriate exercises at home.

5. Devices such as a cervical collar may be necessary to stabilize and properly align the neck to prevent disc compression.

• Be sure to follow exercise regimens as outlined by a physical therapist or your primary care physician.

• Surgical intervention should be considered only as a last resort if all other treatments fail.
