How to Stop a Bad Bloody Nose

A bloody nose often strikes at the worst possible time--when you are fresh out of Kleenex. Luckily, you don't need Kleenex to stop a bloody nose--rather, you rely on a pinch of your fingers to mend it. What's more, contrary to popular myth, you do not have to lean backward to fix it, as that will only cause the blood to flow into your mouth. Remember that if any nosebleed lasts for longer than 10 minutes, you risk losing consciousness and should have someone take you to the emergency room. A bad nosebleed can often be a sign for a more serious problem, so stay aware of the frequency of your nosebleeds.

Find a place to sit and keep your head steady. Do not lean forward or backward, but sit up straight.

    • 2

Pinch your nose for about five minutes, using your thumb and index finger. This will help stop the bleeding.

    • 3

Push a cotton ball into each nostril if your nose still hasn't stopped bleeding.

    • 4

Dab some petroleum jelly (such as Vaseline) inside your nostrils to moisten your nose.

    • 5

Use a humidifier in your bedroom to keep the air moist in your room, to prevent future nosebleeds.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you have recurrent nosebleeds, talk to your doctor about them. They could be a sign of another medical condition, or a side effect of medication.
