How to Convert a DVD to an MPEG4
Take your favorite DVDs on the go with you on your mobile device or simply back up your DVDs on your computer when you convert them to MPEG4 files. The popular compression format, often called MP4, compresses and optimizes your video for the best playback and storage. So whether you need to back up some DVDs or you want to load your iPod or cell phone with crisp video and smooth playback, converting your DVDs to MP4 format isn't hard and can be very useful.

Download a copy of the freeware program DVD Shrink (see Resources) to rip the files from your DVD. Run the program after you're done installing it.

Insert the DVD you wish to convert into your computer's DVD/CD-ROM drive. Click on "Open Disc" in the top-right corner of DVD Shrink. In the menu that appears, choose the drive containing the DVD you inserted (for example: E:\[Disc one]).

Click "Backup Disk," and then click on the "Browse" button to choose a location for the ripped DVD files to go. Click "Done."

Download a free copy of SUPER--the Simplified Universal Player Encoder & Renderer (see Resources). Install the program and then run it.

Open the folder containing files you ripped from the DVD.The VOB files contain the video. Drag and drop each VOB video chunk into the gray field at the bottom of SUPER.

Press "Ctrl+T" on your keyboard to launch SUPER's "Output File Saving Management" menu. Use the menu to choose a location to save the converted MPEG4 files, and then click "Save Changes."

Begin the conversion process by clicking on the option labeled "Encode (Active Files)" at the bottom of SUPER's main menu.
