How to Save to a Flash Drive on a Mac

A flash drive is a data-storage device. Huge strides have been made in recent decades regarding how much data can be stored, the size of the storage devices and how long data will remain readable. Flash drives are small, portable, rewritable and they hold massive amounts of data. A flash drive is sturdy, too, so you won't need to worry about losing your data if you drop it. The process of saving to a flash drive is intuitive on a Mac, but if you've never done it before, it is not difficult to learn.

Instructions

Check the size of your drive. It should be written on the outside. This will determine how much you can store in it. Slide the metal part of the drive into an unused port on your computer or hub. If the flash drive is a USB drive, hold it so that the open section of the end is aligned with the solid section of the port. Once you insert it, an icon of a drive will appear on your desktop.

Click and hold on the folders or files you want to save. Drag them onto the drive icon and release. Depending on the speed of your computer and the size of the files you are copying, this may take a few minutes. When the files have been copied, you'll hear an alert sound. Repeat until all files have been saved.

Drag the drive icon to the Trash, which will look like an Eject symbol. The drive icon will disappear unless there are files in use. If so, quit out of everything and try again. Remove the drive from the port and snap the cover on, if it has one.

Tips & Warnings

  • Back up the data of programs, like Address Book and iCal, from inside the program. Open it up. From the File menu, choose "Back Up" (name of program). Choose your flash drive as the location.

  • Do not remove the flash drive from the port without dragging it to the Trash first.
