Instructions

    • 1

Purchase a good razor. Disposable razors may seem convenient, but they are cheap and cause irritation and shaving bumps. It is more beneficial for a nice shave to invest in a respected brand of razor.

    • 2

Take a shower just before you are ready to shave. If you aren't planning on a shower, but really need to shave, wash the area with new hair growth for at least three minutes. Use hot water to open up your pores and get your skin ready for the shave. You can also choose to do your shaving while in the shower if that is more convenient.

    • 3

Apply shaving cream. Consider using a shaving cream with aloe in it to help heal your skin after you shave. It is better to apply the cream thick than too thin.

    • 4

Start shaving. Move the blades in the direction that goes against your new hair growth. Going with the hair growth leaves the hair still standing. If you aren't sure which direction your hair is growing, try one direction. If it cuts the hair effortlessly, then you are going against the hair growth. If it doesn't, begin shaving in the other direction.

    • 5

Keep dipping your razor in water to rinse off the shaving cream and add more water to the area you are shaving. This is to keep your skin wet so that the razor just skims the surface.

    • 6

Rinse the area you shaved with cold water. Hot water opens up your pores and cold water closes them.

    • 7

Dry your face with a towel by blotting, not wiping.

Tips & Warnings

  • It is best if men apply their shaving cream with a brush to exfoliate the skin. Apply some lotion or aftershave for a smooth, clean look.

  • Don't shave in a hurry or you are more likely to cut yourself.

5a. Keep your razor blade cold. Rinse the blade in cold water often. Metal expands when heated. Cutting creates heat. Expanded metal blades are like old metal blades. They have a jagged edge. Jagged edges mean more nicks and irritation.
