Remote keyless entry is a feature available from the factory on most new vehicles. For those who have vehicles that are not equipped with keyless entry, it is available as an aftermarket option. Typically, aftermarket keyless entry will use the existing power lock wiring to remotely control the vehicle's locking and security systems. If the vehicle was not originally equipped with power locks, aftermarket actuators may be added.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Cordless Drill Multimeter Wire cutter/strippers Solder Soldering iron Electrical tape Nylon wire ties
  1. Step 1

Locate the vehicle's main ignition harness. This harness may be found running down from the ignition cylinder. Use a multimeter to find the 12 volt battery wire, and the main ignition wire. Use solder to attach the keyless entry units power and ignition leads to these wires. Solder both connections, and seal the connections with electrical tape.

  2. Step 2

Locate the vehicle's power lock and unlock wires. These wires will most likely be found in the driver's kick panel. In most cases, these wires will register 12 volts on the multimeter until the lock or unlock buttons are pressed, at which point they will show a ground. Solder the lock and unlock wires from the keyless entry unit to these wires, and use electrical tape to insulate the connections.

  3. Step 3

Find a bare metal surface in the driver's kick panel to ground the unit. If no bare metal is found, scrape the paint from any metal surface in the kick panel, and attach the ground, using a ring terminal and a self-tapping screw.

  4. Step 4

Program the unit according to the instructions provided. There are many programming options available, so program the unit to best suit the needs of the driver.

  5. Step 5

Test the unit for function by pressing lock and unlock. Many vehicles will require two presses of the unlock button to unlock all the doors. If this is the case, program the unit for "double pulse unlock."

Tips & Warnings
  • The instructions above will work for most cars, but there are a number of different locking systems that may require additional parts and programming with which to correctly interface. Verify which locking system the vehicle uses before proceeding with the installation. Many keyless entry systems will allow control of the vehicle's trunk and horn, as well as the locks. Consult the owner's manual to see if this is an option. Many people choose to interface with the vehicle's parking light circuit to give the user a visual confirmation.
  • Always protect the unit and vehicle by using an appropriate fuse on the main power wire.
