Things You'll Need:
- Grip tape Skateboard deck Screwdriver metal file box cutter or razor blade
-
Step 1
Remove the sheet of grip tape from the packaging and hold it over the top of the skateboard deck. Make sure that the surface of the deck is clean and dry. Carefully position the sheet of grip tape (adhesive side down) on the top of the deck so that it fully covers the entire deck.
-
Step 2
Smooth out the grip tape by running your hands along the surface, moving from the center to the edges. You want to smooth out all the air bubbles and bumps. You can use the razor blade or box cutter to pop hard-to-remove air bubbles.
-
Step 3
Using the metal file, scrape hard around the edges of the skateboard deck until you begin to see the deck's white outline. This gives you a guideline to follow when cutting off the excess grip tape.
-
Step 4
Cut away the excess grip tape. Take the razor blade or box cutter and carefully begin cutting from the bottom to the top of the board. Move the blade around the edge of the deck, following the white outline while holding the blade at a 45-degree angle. Carefully pull away the excess grip tape.
-
Step 5
Take the metal file and run it around the edges of the skate deck. Not only does this remove hanging pieces of grip tape, but it also smoothes the edges.
-
Step 6
Using a screwdriver, poke holes into the grip tape where the trucks, or axles of a skateboard, will be mounted. You can find these screw holes by feeling for indentations under the grip tape. There are four holes for each set of trucks, eight total holes on most skateboards.
