How to Get Rid of Odor

Pets, cigarette smoke, and cooking certain types of food can create unpleasant odors. No matter how clean your home is, a bad odor can make it seem dirty and unhealthy. In many instances, you need only turn to your spice rack and your staples cabinet for the ingredients for a fresh-smelling home.

Things You'll Need

  • Vacuum with attachments Scented carpet powder Febreze or similar product Baking soda Vinegar or homemade potpourri Cinnamon and cloves
  • Clean and vacuum the entire house to get rid of any dirt that is creating a bad odor. Use the vacuum's hose attachment to clean along the edge of the carpet and reach behind furniture. If the odor is strong, sprinkle scented carpet powder onto the floor before you vacuum. If the odor persists, check whether the curtains have absorbed it; if so, wash them.

  • If you have pets, use a vacuum attachment to clean upholstered furniture. Consider using slip covers to protect chairs or couches where your pets like to rest. You can then just throw the slip covers into the washing machine. Spray a fabric freshener like Febreze lightly over your upholstery to eliminate any lingering odors.

  • Use baking soda to get rid of pet odors. Open a box of baking soda next to the litter box, pet food and pet's bedding. Baking soda can also help remove odor from carpets where your pet has urinated, as does white vinegar. For soiled clothing or towels, add white vinegar to your washing, along with your normal laundry detergent.

  • Purchase an air purifier for rooms with recurring unpleasant odor. This will also reduce the amount of pet dander in the air, helping those with allergies.

  • Make your own potpourri to get rid of any odor remaining after you have cleaned up. Boil the peels of citrus fruits such as lemons, oranges or grapefruit in a large pot of water. Cloves and cinnamon sticks can be added for extra spice. Once the water starts to boil, turn down the heat to let the pot simmer.

  • Boil away odors. Heat up a half cup of vinegar with two cups of water to banish kitchen odors. Or freshen your entire home by boiling cinnamon and cloves in two cups of water.

Tips & Warnings

  • Place scented dryer sheets under the cushions of your couch and chairs. This keeps the area smelling fresh without being overwhelming.
