How to Burn a DVD With Roxio Toast

Roxio Toast is a program for burning DVDs using a Macintosh computer. It's simple to use, even for someone who is not particularly savvy with electronics. To use the program to burn a DVD, you need to use a recordable DVD. Look for one that has the letters "DVD-R" or "DVD-RW" on its packaging.

      Download Roxio Toast if it is not already installed on your machine. To do so, go to Roxio's website and click on "Buy Now" below the version you'd like to use. Then click on the ".dmg" icon when it shows up on your desktop to launch the install wizard. Note this is a pay download. You can't get the program for free.

      Launch Roxio Toast. Click on the hard drive icon on your desktop and go to your "Applications" folder. Find Roxio Toast in the list and double click. Then put your DVD-R or DVD-RW into your DVD-ROM drive.

      Find the icon in your Roxio Toast window that looks like a film director's clapboard. It should be the third icon from the left. Click on it and choose the "DVD Video" option. Open a finder window by double clicking on the hard drive on your desktop. Use a finder to browse your files to search for the location of the video or image files you want to put on your DVD.

      Drag the files from the finder window to the right side of the Roxio Toast application's window where it says "Drag video files or pictures."

      Click on the red button on the bottom right side of the application window to burn your disc. Your computer will eject the disc when it's finished with the burning process. It could take an hour or more if you have a lot of files or one or more is large.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can adjust the quality of your pictures and video using the "Options" slider on the bottom left pane of the Roxio screen. The three options are "Good," "Better" and "Best." By default, it is set to "Better."

  • Set the disc to auto-play when you insert it in your DVD-ROM by checking the "Auto-play" box in Roxio Toast before you burn it.
