You're moving! If you're renting, you'll need to write a 30-day notice letter to inform your landlord or property management company that you plan to vacate the apartment or house. To ensure you get your deposits back, such as your security deposit, it's important to give notice in a timely manner.

        Find your rental agreement or lease as soon as you know you'll be moving. Ideally you will have a new apartment or house picked out well before the 30 days before your lease is up. Look over your rental agreement and acquaint yourself with the terms of your lease.

        Read through your lease or rental agreement looking for the following information:
        Name and landlord or property management's address
        Terms of the lease, such as move in date and move out date
        Penalties for late move out
        Language explaining the 30-day notice; this may vary, so find out before the 30 days to protect yourself

        Type your renter 30-day notice letter. Start the letter by typing your name and current address (where you are living and renting) at the top. It will look like this (with your specific information, of course):

        My Name
        123 Main Street
        Sunnyside Gardens, Apt. 12
        Anywhere, State 11111

        Type in the date. Make sure this date is at least 30 days before you need to vacate the rental property. Ideally, date it 35 or 40 days before your move out date so you can deliver or mail it immediately so that you are timely. If you need to move out May 1, it may appear like this:

        March 28, 200X

        Type in the landlord or property management company's name and address. It is important that you use the same name and address that is on your rental agreement.

        Your apartment complex may be called Sunnyside Gardens, but the property management name may be Acme Rentals. Use the language as it is written on your lease. If they refer to themselves as Acme Rentals dba (doing business as) Sunnyside Gardens, use this same language.

        Address the 30-day notice letter. Type the landlord's name or if there is none available, type To Whom It May Concern.

        It would appear like this:

        Dear Mr. John Smith,
        or
        To Whom It May Concern,

        Type the body of the letter. This does not have to be long. State the facts and be done. An example follows:

        I am hereby giving 30 days written notice that I will be moving out of my apartment at Sunnyside Gardens on or before April 30, 200X. This will close my lease with Acme Rentals dba Sunnyside Gardens.

        Please mail my deposits and any other funds that are due to me to this address:

        My Name
        333 Hickory Lane
        Anyplace, State 77777

        If you have any questions, please contact me at 555-111-1212.

        Type a closing:

        Sincerely,

        My Name

        Then sign the letter and hand deliver it, if possible, or mail it with delivery confirmation so you can track it.

    • Include any additional details to make your renter 30-day notice letter valid and legal.
