paper fortune tellers have been made and played with by children all over the world for hundreds of years. they are delightful as well as a good distraction for children... one that can keep them busy for some time. weather your a child or an adult, believe in the game or no, the paper fortune teller or cootie catcher is a fun and easy activity.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • paper (construction or computer)
  • scissors
  • ruler (optional)
  • crayons, markers or colored pencils
  • pen (sharpie's work well)
  1. Step 1

hold a sheet of paper horizontally and flat on a surface in front of you.

  2. Step 2

take the top right corner and fold it down to the bottom. line it up so that the edges of the paper is precisely on top of each other and the bottom right corner is folded over its self. push down on the new edge to make sure it stays even.

  3. Step 3

the remaining retangulare peice can now be cut off leaving only the folded triagle that you created in step two.

  4. Step 4

open the triangle. you should have a perfect square. fold the square twice. once horozontaly so the crease goes stright through the middle. open it and fold it again verticle so the crease and the former crease meet in the center and their are equal halves on each side. these creases will help you in the comming steps. (the colored lines in the photo given shows where your new creases will be)

  5. Step 5

with the square open and flat in front of you, take each corner and fold them so the tips touch the center point you created in step 4 and the edges of the paper lines with the creases created in the same step.

  6. Step 6

when all corners are folded into the center flip it around so those corners are flat on the surface and the back side of the paper is what your looking at. again, fold these corners into the center one by one. forming a box.

  7. Step 7

fold this box shape in half horozontaly so you have a rectangle with four flaps. (two on each side) you can put your thumbs and index finers in these flaps. push inwards so your fingers come to gether and youve finished the fortune teller

  8. Step 8

now you must design it. with the fortune teller flat in front of you (so it has its rectanguler shape and youve got two boxes on each side) deside how your going to make the game. some people just decorate the outside but dont use it to tell fortunes. others put numbers colors shapes animals ect.. on the out side. chose one and design acordingly getting all 4 boxes.

  9. Step 9

now open the fortune teller to a square and flip it around to the other side so you are looking at 4 blank triangular flaps with two spaces on each flap. chose numbers colors animal or ect... to put on each space. (8 things) its a good idea to not use what you used before. for example, if you put colors on for the above step use numbers or animals for this step.

  10. Step 10

open each triagular flap one by one and write a fortune on the inside. you can do a basic fortune teller and write "yes, no, maybe, ask again) or you can do 8 answers or even 16. because of the spaces created by the creases. the more answers you intend to give the more indepth you should be. try using hikus or other thigs insted of simple yes or no's in this case.

  11. Step 11

once its all decorated you can begin using it. fold it back into postion. put your fingers in the flaps ask or have some one else ask a question.

  12. Step 12

if you have something on the out side for exaple "numbers 1-4" have them pick a number. when they have use your fingers to switch the teller by alternating pushing your fingers in and out. if they chose the number 3 you alternate 3 times and hold the fortune teller in that place.

  13. Step 13

ask the person with the question to chose between what ever is revealed on the inside. for example if you had colors on the inside and the person chose the color "blue" you should switch the fortune teller for each letter in the word. their are 4 leters in the word blue so you should alternate your fingers 4 times.

  14. Step 14

some people will have them pick again and do more alternating. others just have the people pick from what is revealed and open that flap and give the answer. if you have more then one fortune under a flap you must have the person pick one or two and read the coresponding fortune.
