Make a Custom Quilt from T-Shirts Part III - Quilt Sandwich and Tying

T-shirts are great collectables and many people bring them back from college, school, vacation, and clubs. Here's a way make your own handmade quilts from T-shirts.

Now that you have saved your T-shirt memories with a quilt top, it's time to make them into a finished quilt. This last step will put it all together.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Quilt top from step II
  • Quilt back from step II
  • Quilt Batting
  • 2" Safety Pins
  • Curved or straight needles
  • Thread snippers
  • Scissors
  • Embroidery Thread in various colors
  • Large Floor Space
  • Nice big table
  1. Step 1

First make the big quilt sandwich. In your large floor space, lay the Quilt back out right side down. Be careful to smooth out all the wrinkles. From this point on, do NOT walk on the quilt area.

  2. Step 2

Lay the batting over the quilt back and carefully pull out any wrinkles

  3. Step 3

Lay the quilt top on top of the batting right side up. Try to center the quilt top over the seam in the quilt back. There should be an excess of quilt back and batting around all the edges.

  4. Step 4

Starting near the center, pin the top, batting and backing together. Pin in each sashing strip and cornerstone. Also pin two pins in each outside edge sashing strip. Because of the delicate nature of T-shirts do not pin in the T-shirt area.

  5. Step 5

When this is done, bring your quilt sandwich to the nice big table for quilting. T-shirts are more delicate than normal quilts so this tutorial is for hand tying the quilt. Hand tying is easier on the shirts and will help your quilt last longer.

  6. Step 6

Change colors of embroidery floss for each T-shirt square, sashing strip, and cornerstone. A curved needle will make this process very easy and keep your thread from getting tangled with itself. Curved needles may look scary and be clumsy at first but they are a breeze to use after just a little practice.

  7. Step 7

Now start tying knots. Thread your needle with three strands of floss.

In the cornerstones, insert the needle in the center of the cornerstone and back up again leaving a short tail. Tie a square knot, cut off.

  8. Step 8

In the sashing strips: Begin by placing a knot in the center of the sashing strip. Then, using that knot as a guide, place a knot centered between it and the outside edge. You should have three evenly spaced knots.

  9. Step 9

In the T-shirt area: Begin by placing a knot in the center of the T-shirt. Then, using that knot as a guide, Place knots centered between it and top, bottom, and sides. Then, using those knots as guides, place four knots in the four corners. You should now have nine evenly spaced knots.

  10. Step 10

When all of the knots are tied, bind the quilt with the binding of your choice.
