Things You'll Need:
- Boiling water
- Vinegar
- Diswashing detergent
-
Step 1
Boil some water and pour it down the sink. This should help to loosen or rinse away any waxy or fatty buildup (disgusting yes, have you been pouring these things down your sink?). If you pour hot grease, or soups and liquids with fat in them down the sink, it will cool quickly in the pipes and can leave a buildup that will trap food and bacteria. If you suspect you have a problem with grease or other food trapped in the pipes, boiling water can be used as a cheap, effective and totally green method to remove food scum and kill bacteria.
-
Step 2
Add a little dishsoap to your hot water, and run that through the pipes. Abundant water is also going to help us remove sink odors. If you have recurring problems with stinky sink, remember to always rinse well and let some water run after washing dishes.
-
Step 3
If there are still smells, try to neutralize them by using some white vinegar. Pour a bit down the sink, then also use a cloth and wipe all the surfaces with vinegar. After giving the vinegar some time to work, rinse it away, again with abundant water. Your sink should be smelling much more pleasant by now.
-
Step 4
If there is still a smell, you will probably need to have a plumber investigate your pipes. There might be a physical obstruction that needs to be removed, or if you sink is old it may need new plumbing.
