Know that you are entitled to Unemployment benefits if you were not fired from a temporary assignment or quit. Because the amount you need to earn with a temp agency varies from state to state, it is impossible to tell you how much you have to make in order to qualify for benefits, you will have to contact your Unemployment office.

There are (3) Three factors that determine if you qualify for benefits.
      1. How much money you earned in the base period,
      2. Why you are unemployed, and
      3. If you are able, available, and actively seeking full-time work.

If your state is set up to process claims online, you will not have to go into the office at all. If you have to go into the office to apply, you may want to get there as early as you can because you will have to wait a while.

After you apply for unemployment, you will receive something within a week telling you if you qualify or not for unemployment. They will tell you when your payments will start and what your weekly amount will be.

Some states have a card like a credit card that they mail out to you and your benefits will be put on them weekly.

You don't have to tell your agency you are applying for unemployment. Just do it. Just continue to check in with them at least once a week.

You can still collect unemployment if you work part time. Say you get a job at the mall and you work 15 hours a week and make $100.00, if your benefit amount is $250.00, it would make sense to submit a claim for that week since the amount is less than your benefit amount. They will deduct a certain percentage, but you will still get a payment.

Don't forget that Federal legislation signed into law on February 17, 2009, a weekly $25 stimulus payment, so you are going to get the extra money weekly which can also help you.

Be sure to read your unemployment handbook for your state because it will give you all the particulars for the program.

Tips & Warnings

  • Be sure to establish with your agency the lowest amount you will accept for an assignment. If your minimum salary is $11.00 per hour and that is what the agency has been paying you, and then they find work for you for $8.00 and hour, you can call the Unemployment Office and ask to see if you have to accept that work. You don't want to lose your benefits because you refused an assignment.
