Two inkjet printed designs ready to cut out for a collage

When you print an image with an inkjet printer and intend to use it in a collage, there may be a problem with the ink running when you apply the modpodge to the image. This can be solved by the simple but absolutely necessary techniques discussed in this article.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • bright white printing paper
  • mod podge
  • KRYLON acrylic clear spray
  • fine steel wool
  • soft paintbrush or sponge
  • scissors
  • an inkjet printer
  1. Step 1

Print the image off on your printer using a print resolution of 72 dpi. Be sure to use bright white paper.

  2. Step 2

Wait for the ink to dry at least 20 minutes.

  3. Step 3

Spray the image with 2 or 3 coats of Krylon spray, allowing to dry between coats.

  4. Step 4

Cut out the image to be applied as collage.

  5. Step 5

Spread a thin coat of watered down modpodge on to the surface you wish to apply the image to. Use a soft brush or a sponge.

  6. Step 6

Place the image on the modpodged area and spread another thin coat of watered down modpodge to the front side of the image, rub and spread carefully with your fingers or a squeegee.

  7. Step 7

Wait for this to dry and then spread two or three coats of regular modpodge on the top, waiting for it to dry between coats. Use fine steel wool after each application after it is dry and before spreading the next coat.

  8. Step 8

When you are finished applying your coats of modpodge, spray the final product with two or three coats of Krylon spray. Again, rub down gently with steel wool between each application of spray.

  9. Step 9

Finish your project appropriately with the addition of whatever else is necessary to complete your project. In my case, I make wooden refrigerator magnets, so the final step is adding a magnet on to the back of the project.

Tips & Warnings
  • Printing with a resolution of 72 dpi is best so that there is not too heavy a concentration of ink.
  • Using the Krylon spray prevents most of the ink from running but if there should be "spread", this will occur during the first application of the watered down modpodge. Quickly wiping off with a paper towel will pick up this extra coloration bu will not damage the image in any way.
  • When you use the KRYLON spray be sure to follow the instructions about doing this in a well ventilated area.
  • Always wait between applications of spray or modpodge for the image to dry completely.
