How to Configure a Secure Wireless Network
Configuring a secure wireless network is not an overly complicated procedure. Even if you have little technical computer skill, or little experience with wireless routers and connections, you can configure a router and have your computer connected into your own wireless Internet source in a short time, as long as you have a router and network cable on hand. This network can be password-protected against outsiders who would otherwise steal your bandwidth.

1
Unplug your broadband modem from the wall.
-
2
Connect the network cable into one of the available ports on the back of the router. Depending on your specific situation (see the information provided in your wireless router manual), make sure the cable is placed within either the WLAN, WAN or Internet port on the modem.
-
-
3
Plug in the cable modem, and make sure it is turned on. Insert the network cable for the router into the wireless router, taking care not to plug the cable into a port labeled WAN, WLAN or Internet.
-
4
Launch your preferred Internet browser. Input the special address that is provided by the router manual and hit "Enter." (This address is always exclusive to the specific manufacturer that made the router.)
-
5
Wait for the page to load, and then input the information upon request. This first entails selecting an SSID, which is a name of your own creation for the wireless network you are setting up.
-
6
Create a password for your network. This step comes after setting up the SSID, and will allow you to keep others from using your wireless network. The password is of your chooisng, but should be one that is easy for you to remember, yet still difficult for someone else to guess. Usually, a combination of letters and numbers is your best bet in this regard.
-
7
Select a type of data encryption. The two most popular options are WEP and WPA. If at all possible, use WPA. The data encryption involved with WPA is stronger than WEP, and it is a standard that was created to address some of the weaknesses of WEP. However, if you are using older equipment, it may only support WEP encryption.
-
8
Choose "Apply." This will save your wireless network settings. Disconnect the network cable from the back of your laptop. (This temporary, wired Internet connection will no longer be required.)
-
9
Click on the network icon on the bottom right of the toolbar of your computer. A list of available wireless networks will appear, and you can select the name (SSID) of your newly created secure wireless network. Input your password when prompted, and begin Internet surfing.
