However, if you choose to do it yourself this guide will walk you through the process.

Things You'll Need:

    How to Tow a Car

  1. Step 1

First you need to have a truck. A manual transmission is preferred, but an automatic will work.

  2. Step 2

Take a small chain and look under the front of the car to be towed. Find the frame of the car, wrap the chain around the left side of the frame twice, then hook the chain. Repeat this step on the right side of the car. Be sure to wrap the chain twice and then hook the head of the chain on a link. Wrap it around the frame as far to the left and right as you can.

  3. Step 3

Take the other small chain and look under the back of the truck. Find the frame of the truck, wrap the chain around the left side of the frame twice, then hook the chain. Repeat this step on the right side of the truck. Be sure to wrap the chain twice and then hook the head of the chain on a link. Wrap it around the frame as far to the left and right as you can.

  4. Step 4

Now take the large 7-foot pipe and run the long chain through it. The pipe should be just big enough around to fit the chain through. This pipe will keep the car from rear-ending the truck and will prevent any damage.

  5. Step 5

Next, wrap the long chain around the chain hooked on to the back of the truck twice, then twice around itself, and finally hook the head on a link. Repeat this step for the chain on the front of the car.

  6. Step 6

Have your assistant steer the car, while you drive the truck. If your truck has a manual transmission, do not shift above third gear. If you are in an automatic, put it in low or first. After speed is increased, shift to second, and finally shift to drive. Drive as slow as possible.

Tips & Warnings
  • Tell your assistant to watch your tail gate while steering. Tap your brakes three times and then break; this way your assistant will know when to break. Don't let any slack in the chain.
  • Do not drive over 30 miles an hour. Do not come to sudden stops. Use emergency flashers on each vehicle.
