How to Pick Tennis Rackets

Tennis rackets come in various shapes, sizes and design. When selecting a racket, there's no right or wrong choice as it often comes down to feel, comfort level and personal choice. When selecting a racket, head size, string patterns and grip are key factors. Rackets are available for beginner, intermediate and expert players. The right racket might help in hitting the winning ace or reaching that tough cross-court shot.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose between three categories of rackets: game improvement, control or tweener. Game-improvement rackets are used for power and utilize an oversized head, are lightweight, and are longer in the handle. Control rackets are heavier but provide more control for the seasoned player. Tweener rackets combine both game improvement and control elements for an intermediate-level player.

    • 2

Pick a racket size relative to your goals on the court. Standard rackets usually are 27 inches long and offer more control. Longer rackets (up to 29 inches) are sometimes sought for players who can reach that extended ground stroke. Many of these longer rackets are made lighter for flexibility.

    • 3

Check the stiffness of a racket. The stiffer racket creates more power in hitting the ball. However, that also means there's less flexibility in the racket. Flexibility in a racket decreases stress on arms, shoulders and elbows.

    • 4

Focus on the string patterns. The fewer strings, the more give in the racket. The more openness you have between strings also allows for the racket to grab the ball more, creating more spin on your shot. For reference, the tighter the strings, the more control the player has. And the looser the strings, the more power you'll exhibit.

    • 5

Look at the grip of a racket. Grips vary from 4 to 4 5/8 inches in diameter. It's a matter of personal comfort when choosing a grip. If you choose a grip that seems small for your hand, use grip tape to build the handle up.

Tips & Warnings

  • Tennis rackets are made in a variety of materials. Lightweight materials include aluminum, titanium and graphite. Most rackets now weigh between 9 and 12 oz., unstrung. When testing a racket's grip, hold it. If you can touch your thumb with one of your fingers near the knuckle, you have the right size. If it seems a bit small, you can add grip tape or have the racket regripped to your satisfaction.
