How to Mask Something in Photoshop

If you want to create an image in which you have separated out one section of the image and removed the rest, there are several ways to do this using Adobe Photoshop, such as selecting and deleting the section you don't want or simply using the erase tool to remove the unwanted bits. You can also learn how to use the Mask tool to perform this action.

Instructions

    • 1

Open Photoshop. Then go to File and select "Open." Browse to the image you want to edit, select it and click "OK."

    • 2

Go to the Layers panel and right-click on the background layer. Select "Duplicate Layer." Drag the original background layer to the Trash bin at the bottom of the Layers panel. Then go to the bottom of the Layers panel and click "New Layer."

    • 3

Drag the new layer under the other layer. Use the "Fill" tool to fill the new layer with whatever color you like. Select the top layer.

    • 4

Click "Q" on your keyboard to activate the Quick Mask. Select the "Brush" tool and paint over those sections you want to keep. You can change the size and style of the brush as you work to improve your accuracy. When done, click "Q" again to turn the Quick Mask off. Now click "Delete," and the unwanted bits are gone.
