Suntan lotions contain chemicals such as benzophenone that protect skin from the sun's ultraviolet rays. Unprotected exposure to the sun can have short-term effects such as painful sunburns, or long-term effects such as skin damage or even cancer. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, suntan lotion must be applied generously all over exposed parts of the body prior to going outdoors and must be reapplied often to keep skin properly protected.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Suntan lotion with Sun Protection Factor of 15 or higher Lip balm with Sun Protection Factor of 15 or higher
  1. Step 1

Gently shake the suntan lotion bottle to ensure contents are properly mixed. Measure approximately 1 oz. (about one handful) of suntan lotion in your palm.

  2. Step 2

Smooth a thick layer of suntan lotion on all exposed areas of skin at least 30 minutes before going outdoors so it can absorb into the skin. Start with body parts that are easily accessible to you, such as arms, legs, chest, feet and behind knees.

  3. Step 3

Ask a friend to rub suntan lotion on your back or any other areas you cannot reach. Use sunscreen in a spray form to mist onto hard to reach areas if you don't have any assistance.

  4. Step 4

Spread a thick layer of suntan lotion on your face, neck and ears, being very careful not to get suntan lotion in eyes. Apply lip balm containing SPF to lips.

  5. Step 5

Reapply 1 oz. of suntan lotion every hour you are outdoors. Reapply suntan lotion sooner if you are swimming or sweating because it will rub off and leave you unprotected.

Tips & Warnings
  • Don't forget about applying suntan lotion to bald spots or areas covered by jewelry or sunglasses.
  • Check the expiration date on the suntan lotion's label because ingredients may become ineffective over time.
