Connect your web cam to your computer using the manufacturer's directions. Today's web cams are usually plug and go. Take the USB cord from the web cam and plug it into the available drive on your computer.

Download Windows Live Messenger for free. You must register for the free Windows Live account to make use of this service.

Test your web cam and microphone to be sure they are operational.

Log into your Windows Live Messenger account which you set up in step 3. Add anyone you would like to chat with to your buddy list. Invite someone from your buddy list to chat or accept an invitation to chat. Windows Live Messenger will connect and you can converse with in real time.

This is an online version of Windows Live Messenger which you won't have to download. You will still need to register for the free Windows Live account to use this service.
