Breathing Exercises for Hypertension

Hypertension, or high blood pressure, can be caused by several different factors, including stress level, poor diet and insufficient exercise.       Set a kitchen timer for the amount of time you would like your deep breathing exercise to last.

      Go to a room that you are comfortable in. Make sure that it is quiet.

      Breathe slowly--approximately six repetitions per minute, with each breath lasting 10 seconds.

      Break your breath down. Breathe in through your nose for four seconds, and out through your mouth for six seconds.

      Concentrate on both your breathing and the sweeping second hand of the clock. When you find your mind drifting, anchor it by repeating the correct number on the clock. Paying attention to the position of the second hand will assist you in keeping a correct rhythm.
