How to Change Windows XP Activation Keys

You may have found out the Windows XP activation key (also called a "product key") that was installed in your computer, has been pirated. You must change the key before the expiration period (usually 30 days) or XP will stop functioning. There are essentially two ways to change your Windows activation key. The first way is to completely reinstall Windows XP with a good copy; the second way is to change your key in the registry. Microsoft provides a free tool called the "Windows Product Key Update Tool," which will allow you to change your activation key (see Resources).

Instructions

    • 1

Back up your registry, click "Start," "All Programs," "Accessories," "System Tools" and then "System Restore." Select "Create a restore point" and click "Next." Name your restore point and click "Create." Then click "Home" on the next screen, and click "Cancel" to leave System Restore. Note that this step is critical, since the tool you will be using changes your registry.

    • 2

Download, install and start the Windows Product Key Update Tool (see Resources).

    • 3

Click "Next" in the "Windows Product Key Update Tool."

    • 4

Notice that your system is being scanned for errors.

    • 5

Type in your new product activation key (you do not have to worry about capitalization) and click "Next."

    • 6

Activate your copy of Windows by following the directions on the screen after you have updated your product key.

    • 7

Go to the "Validate Microsoft XP" site listed in the Resources to validate and verify your new activation key.
